She wore a scarf around her head to cover the bald spots chemo had caused on her.

Seeing her bald spots daily reminded her of who she had now become. She was now a woman with Cancer at the age of 33. She didn’t care about hair you see; she wanted to do a pixie cut way before the illness came into her life. Heck she even thought a bald look was edgy and sexy. But now why did she hesitate to do it? to just shave her head. Perhaps she wasn't ready or she knew that taking the razor and shaving her head would mean she gave in to what she had. The scarf was her protection until she decided to do it. She thought it was a fashion statement and gave her super powers. The scarf represented protection, comfort, and some normalcy in her life since everything else inside her was chaotic. The scarf was leopard; which made her feel like a Queen. She wrapped the scarf around her head in different ways to give it style. She embraced the new look, but when it was time to take off the scarf she was reminded of who she was now; a woman with Cancer. She continued wearing her scarf day after day until she could no longer continue to carry on with the lie. She had to confront herself and see what was happening. She was no longer able to lie to herself, the scarf wasn’t enough now to make her feel safe. The hair was all over the place; her pillows, the shower, the floor, there was no way she could continue ignoring her crown. She finally decided not alone though; but through the help of her sisters, the women who became her anchor in a time of complete inner chaos, to let go of what she was holding unto; her old life, the old Millie. She no longer needed the scarf to make her strong because she had a group of women and men behind her, loving her and showing her the true meaning of friendship and love. They waited patiently for her to make the decision to shave her head, she carried her bald spots with her scarf wrapped around her head for 3 months.
Fashion saved her life multiple times, you may call it vanity, but the scarf empowered her and allowed her to move slowly into this new life she was not ready for yet. In a world where everyone wants to go 100 miles per hour, and rush through the journey, she now wanted the journey to go 1 mile per hour. You see she realized life is too precious to waste it, she now preferred to hug her boys tighter every moment she could, she wanted to feel the wind caress her skin a little bit longer, she wanted to cry from the soul and feel it more than ever. And when the night came she thanked God for allowing her to live another day.
So you see I understand you sister when you wear your scarf around your head because chemo took all of it, but what it didn’t take was your inner strength. It is that inner strength that keeps you going, it is that unconditional support and love that doesn’t let you give up, because if you do, you are saying life is not worth living. You are saying those who love you are not worthy, you are saying no to everything the minute you throw the towel. So today decide to take the towel and wrap it around your head, and strut through the streets fashionably strong. I tell you fashion saved me!!
